WHAT IS IN THIS BLOG?

Just when you think the KSK Fan Site couldn't get any better in terms of the new friendships and support that is building within the community, it does. Let me explain. KSK members, Johnny Rock, Dianna Marzigliano, Timothy Wyant and Tina D. Rubin are putting together the first "Meet and Greet" for KSKers in New Orleans scheduled for Friday, July 13, 2012 at C Beavers.  To top it off, Jack Curenton and other Californians are putting together another "Meet and Greet," on the same night, while several others are planning parties in New York, Arizona, and Florida.  WHEW!  Read more about the KSK Part Even in this blog.  Other information in this blog includes information on call backs, IMDb, member spotlight, I present one of my very first short films, Take flight and the second Behind the Scenes interview featuring me.

Be sure to check out the other pages as well in The Actor's Spotlight, The Back Lot, and The Slate for screenwriters.

Lastly, I cannot think each of you enough for the overwhelming response to my blog and the support for The Keystroke Killer.  More about that later so keep reading.  And, don't forget to subscribe and join the site to get an alert for the updates. I frequently post something new to one of the pages prior to the publication of Dr. Mel's Message on Thursday nights around 10  P.M.  I'll try to post it early this week, since it is a Holiday and many of you will be home.

Speaking of Thursday nights, if you haven't joined in on the party be sure to sign in on your Facebook account as many KSKers chat about the blog and take part in a virtual cocktail hour to read the blog. That is a party all on its own.

CALL BACKS FOR THE KEYSTROKE KILLER UPDATE
By Margo Fleming

New Orleans - July 5, 2012 -On May 30, 2012 the Facebook fan site to the new television series pilot The Keystroke Killer almost came to a complete standstill due to the number of submissions. Actors from all over the United States were trying to meet the deadline. Why? For their chance at getting a coveted role in the new series created by Dr. Melissa Caudle, producer, screenwriter, and author of numerous books for screenwriters, film producers, and reality show creators. "It was a night I'll never forget," says Dr. Mel Caudle.  "It was around 1:30 AM and I was up interacting on the site and I had several KSK casting team members in a group Skype session. It all seemed to happen all at once."

Robby Stroud, associate producer of The Keystroke Killer, and Executive Administrative Assistant for On the Lot Productions, shares in Caudl'es amazement. "We literally couldn't add people to the site fast enough," Stroud says. "As soon as one of us could add to the member base, 12 more would come through. To top it off, over 500 auditions came in at once."

Both Caudle and Stroud were shocked as more and more auditions were uploaded making the deadline. According to Stroud, up until that historic night the largest request of actors requesting to join the site on a single day was 125.  "The night of the audition deadline we hit a record high of 923 requests to join us," Stroud said.

The good news according to Dr. Mel is that she believes most roles for The Keystroke Killer pilot series are going to be able to be cast from the first round of online auditions.  "The high quality of actors that submitted overwhelmed me," says Dr. Mel. First round face-to-face auditions were tentatively planned for the second and third week of July. However, the time frame will have to be pushed up a bit due to conflicts in Caudle's schedule. "What a great problem I am faced with," Caudle says. I'm producing three reality shows, the 40 and Leroy web-series with Reed McCants and Neema Barnette, and in this phase of The Keystroke Killer. To top it off, my publisher, Open Door Publishing House,LLC, is pushing me for my next book to be completed.

There is only so much time in the day." Caudle and Stroud fully expect that the first round of face-to-face call backs are now slated for the first and second week of August. "This will give all of us breathing room," Caudle says. "We want to be able to concentrate during the call back period on nothing but The Keystroke Killer. The first couple of weeks in August is that time frame. Mark's (Mark Freehelm, executive producer) calendar is pretty much cleared in August as well. So, this makes for the perfect time for call backs."

The Keystroke Killer casting team has hit a home-run and according to Hollywood Insiders are fast becoming trendsetters in the industry.  The online casting process they are using allows actors from all over the country to participate and audition.  "As producers and directors, we are no longer bound to casting out of Los Angles or New York," says Dr. Mel.  "We can see anyone from any state and at any time."

Still from one of the auditions for Blaze.
The vision for Dr. Mel is a simple one, yet extremely trendsetting concept.  "We didn't want to be influenced by resumes, actor's personalities, or the fact that one of our members know a particular actor," says Dr. Mel.  "The Keystroke Killer project is slated as a television series.  Therefore, aired and seen on our television screens.  That is how we wanted to first see the actors.  Having them submit online first allowed us to view potential cast on our computer monitors and in the case of Freehelm, his Facebook account is set to his big screen 52-inch television.  He watched all of them that way."  The casting team felt that if they looked good on screen during auditions, then their ability to portray the characters would translate when the project is complete.

WHAT'S IMDB REALLY ABOUT

by Dr. Melissa Caudle

What is the International Movie Data Base (IMDb)? Is it important? Is is a must to be register as an actor, producer, director, and crew of the various projects we have all worked on? Do industry professionals really pay attention to your IMDb credits? Let's see if I can figure some of this out for all of us. This includes me up until a few weeks ago didn't realize the importance of IMDb credits.

First, IMDb is considered the premiere online database of information related to films, television programs, actors, video games, and crew. With over 100 million unique users each month and growing due to the presence of our mobile phone applications, the importance of the data base cannot be denied. The truth is, industry professionals refer to this site and refer to it often.

IMDb launched in late 1990 and by 1998 Amazon.com acquired the site. That alone should tell anyone how large and how successful IMDb is and how having your work listed in the data base is important. What started out as a hobby of Col Needham, an English film buff, in 1987, he kept his list on paper and published it in a posting titled Those Eyes

The original list isn't what you might think and is totally different from the format that IMDb uses today. Those Eyes, originally was nothing more than a listing of female actors with beautiful eyes. Others soon followed in Needham's path and started posting list of their own including lists of retired actors and crew, deceased actor's and crew, and so forth.

Col Needham
IMDb Founder
Needham had a vision to combine all the lists in a searchable platform. That list became known as the "rec.arts.movies movie database." Soon, the Internet played a large role and Needham and his colleagues encouraged everyone to start contributing to the list. Thus, IMDb was born. Funding soon became a problem for Needham and that is when Amazon.com stepped in. Needham and his colleagues soon found themselves running IMDb in full-time paid positions. As time passed, expansion to the list grew to include additional demographic material such as trivia, biographies, plot summaries, and ratings. The integrated database became a centralized interface and holds great respect in the film and television industry. Now you know how IMDb got started. So, this brings us to the second and third questions at the top of this article.

Yes, industry professionals pay attention to your IMDb credit as I soon learned when I started the online casting process for The Keystroke Killer. Not only were actors constantly referring Robby and I to their IMDb pages, they were looking at ours. To be honest, I had never really paid attention to my IMDb page. Having come from a professional career as an educator, I thought my resume would speak for itself. Was I wrong. Resumes are important, however, if they are not public or listed on IMDb, it seems no one really cares. As a result, I am now playing catch up. When I have a spare minute, which in reality is none, I am going to try and submit my previous projects. Up until this point, any IMDb credit I have has come at the hands of someone else putting them in with the exception of my films. I won't be submitting for The Keystsroke Killer television project until I know who the cast and crew are. I'm not going to waste my time and double my effort. I simply don't have a minute of spare time.

With all of this said about IMDb, there is a new category on it - the Facebook "Like" button. It seems these will impact our ratings as done the number of people who view your page. Having a Phd in statistical research I was curious about how the ratings were done in IMDb headquarters. So here it is.  IMDb uses the following formula to calculate the weighted rating.

W = \frac{Rv + Cm}{v+m}
where:
W\ = Weighted Rating
R\ = average for the movie/actor/crew as a number from 0 to 10 (mean) =  (Rating)
v\ = number of votes  or Facebook likes = (votes)
m\ = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 3000)
C\ = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.9)
Jack Curenton's IMDB
Head Shot
Aren't you glad you know that now? Just kidding. But, with all joking aside, KSK member Jack Curenton started a comment posting section on The Keystroke Killer Fan Site on Facebook asking everyone to not only visit his page and "Like" him on Facebook, but to also post their IMDb link as well.    I think it is a wonderful idea. Another KSK member, Stephen Beal, has consolidated the list of KSK members in a google document to make it easier for everyone to find the members and their IMDb pages.  Thank you Jack and Stephen for doing this for all of us and the KSK casting team plans on taking advantage of the list too and viewing the pages too.

The link below will take you to Stephen's document of our IMDB listings.  So, take the time and support one another and "Like" our pages.

KSK PARTY TIME

By Robby Stroud

Things are getting hot in New Orleans as the ground swell for The Keystroke Killer continues to grow. And, just in time for the summer fun, The Keystroke Killer Fan Site Party Administrators are taking action and planning on the first New Orleans "Meet and Greet Social" at C. Beavers in Metairie, LA.  I'm not sure of the date yet, but I have a feeling it will be a party to remember. Just look at the names of the KSK Party Planners - Johnny Rock, Dianna Marzigliano, Timothy Wyant and Tina D. Rubin (pictured left to right) who got together at C. Beavers to start planning for the KSK group event.

The date has been set for Friday, July 13, 2012.  How appropriate of a date is that for a Keystroke Killer group social event? Johnny is supplying the club, the music, the gumbo, and the red beans and rice.  Sounds good as I know it will be. We held our wrap party at C Beavers for Dark Blue and had a blast. As details emerge, I'll keep everyone in the loop right here on Dr. Mel's Message and Johnny will be posting a group event to the page. Come one, come all and join the fun. This party isn't just for the actors who auditioned, but it is also for any KSK group member, their spouses or dates, and any supporter of The Keystroke Killer

I plan on doing something else as well and giving away a couple of things as door prizes. This isn't a fundraiser, but a PARTY!!!!

ROCKYN ROBYN SPEAKS UP ON THE KSK FAMILY

by Robby Stroud

Robby and the Limo she drove.
Over the years I have been involved in film production as an extra, production assistant, set driver, chauffeur, and as transportation coordinator. But nothing compares to my experience with the online audition process of The Keystroke Killer. First of all, let me say that I feel we have put together the greatest pool of talent in the history of film acting community.  Kudos to all of you.  As I have said before, we are a force to be reckoned with. Not only for this project, but many more to come. I want to personally thank every one of you for being diligent and helping us in this new process.

The experience has been overwhelming at times, but I wouldn't trade it for any job in the world.  I have never had a job that was so rich in forming relationships with others in a community of dreamers and believers. The friendships formed are cherished and although I've never met 99% of you in person, I feel as if you are as much of a friend as those I have and that I see on a weekly basis. In fact, I think, I chat with you more than them.

And, on Thursday nights, it is an online party as we all anticipate and comment on Dr. Mel's Message. Last week, a couple of us not only chatted online, but we Skyped and shared a virtual beverage or two. The only thing missing was the virtual toast and the clinging of the glasses.

Not only are these friendships, but the networking on the KSK Fan Site is powerful. I have witnessed people coming together to read auditions for each other, obtaining a photographer for head shots, fixing one another's computers, videoing each other's auditions, announcing casting calls, and so much more. Dr. Mel and I never dreamed of all of this when we started this process. Go KSK family and keep the friendships rolling in. We are just at the beginning of this journey and we truly want to share the experience with every one of you.

And, happy Independence Day. Celebrate on!

KSK MEETS FFF

Each July I get very excited as the NFL football season begins training camps. I just love the NFL, watching my team, the New Orleans Saints, and playing Fantasy Football. That's right, Fantasy Football. I am currently in my fourth year of playing and have come close a couple of times to winning. The first team I am on includes my entire family - all my children, their husbands, my nephew, and even my mother played one year. It is very competitive between all of as from the beginning of the draft to the final game. I also played on the team with the Straw Dog cast and crew. These guys took it very seriously from our director, Rod Lurie, to some of the actors like Anson Mount.

Anyone interested in forming a KSK FFF league?  I would love to take on some of you. As I told you before, I love to play and forming this league would be awesome. With that said, someone will have to volunteer to be the commissioner as I won't have the time. And, we don't have to have the buy in at a high amount since most of us are broke actors etc.  So, let me know if you are interested in either playing or being the commissioner.  Oh, BTW, my daughter Kelly Molina will also play.

TAKE FLIGHT - THE SHORT FILM

By Dr. Mel Caudle

Last week I presented you with the Behind the Scenes short and sizzle reel for the film Dark Blue, directed and written by David C. Kirtland. This week, not only am I sharing the interview of me from that film, but I am also going to share something a little different. In fact, if this is what you want to call it, it was my first "short film" I ever did.  Actually, I did this short, Take Flight, to learn the basics of editing. Now that I reflect on the title of this short film I don't think I could have named it any better as it documents my own journey into producing as I "Take Flight," into the editing world.

First up is the interview that David did of me the night before our first day of shooting. I've added in some graphics and footage from the film, but it gives a very candid view of my philosophy on producing and the casting process of Dark Blue. The film, directed and written by David C. Kirtland, is a film noir dark drama centered on Detective Callaghan as he attempts to define the boundaries between right and wrong.  The film's cast includes Tracy Miller, Lance Nichols, Blake Palmenitier, Shanna Forestall and Doc Whitney.  Also, KSK group members Wanda Leigh, Hunter MacGregor, Melissa Ray, and Johnny Rock are also in this film. Here is the interview of me shot the night before principle photography began.

I am an avid fan of silent movies so I stayed in that genre for my first attempt. So, I created a little short using historical public domain footage of the Wright Brother's first flight along with some "Alien Friends." Take a look at it below (3 minutes/black/white). It's not the best cinematic short film, but it does capture my journey into film production as it preceded the short film The Keystroke Killer.

The historical flight of the Wright Brothers takes on a whole new twist with visitors from outer space watching their inaugural flight.

THE NEW OPENING FOR KSK
By Dr. Mel Caudle

I practice what I preach. If you are wondering what I mean by that, in my book Just Beat it! How to Develop and Create Beat Sheets, I address the importance of two things. First, the importance of using a beat sheet in outlining your screenplay long before the writing process begins. Then, I preach the importance of evaluating your own script using the Beat Evaluation Form I include in my book.  That is exactly what I have spent the last couple of days doing - evaluating my script from the very first line to the very last one . This process gave me new insight into KSK: Transcendence. In fact, I was inspired to re-write the opening three scenes. Because of the re-write, I think that it is stronger than before, and the opening is a lot more powerful.  Oddly enough, I now have three new openers and I will have to decide which one is the best. I love them all, but of course I can only choose  one.

Since I am a believer of team work, I asked the KSK group on Facebook, who would like to discuss the opening with me and then I asked them to tell me why it should be them. The KSK team responded quickly. It was difficult to choose just one, so I will choose three of you. If we can do a group chat on Skype or Facetime or whatever, that would be great. I kinda like to think of it as a focus group and who better to listen to that the fabulous community assembles on KSK Facebook Fan Site.  With that said, the three individuals I like to put together for this process are:  Jack Curenton, his creativity and experience says it all, Marcia French, I like her insight, and Gina Lee as she is in the process of reading my book so she'll understand where I am coming from.  So, let's figure out the best time is for all of us and attempt a group skype.  Of course, each of you will have to sign the nondisclosure agreement first, then I'll send you the opening scenes and we'll discuss them.  I can't wait to hear your feedback.
